Secretary of Defense Ash Carter made a visit to Fort Campbell, as soldiers there prepared for their role in the fight against ISIS.
On Wednesday, 200 members of the 101st Airborne Division 2nd Brigade Combat Team will be leaving this spring for Iraq.
Carter said the mission will be focused on building a lasting defeat by training local forces that will eventually be able to take on ISIS by themselves.
Carter said the key target in fighting Islamic State will be hitting them in their wallet by degrading their ability to finance terror.
“Just this week we hit a major ISIL bulk cash center in Mosul,” Carter said. “Depriving ISIL of financial resources is a central part of the operation for Mosul.”
Wednesday’s visit was part of a larger series of stops for Carter. Thursday, he's visiting the U.S. Central Command and U.S. Southern Command -- both in Florida.
