FRANKLIN, Tenn. – A portion of Highway 96 in Williamson County has been renamed to honor a country music legend.
A section of State Route 96 in Franklin has officially been renamed the George Jones Memorial Highway.
A dedication was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, not far from the intersection of Highway 96 and Interstate 65.
Jones’ widow, Nancy, was present for the ceremony and said it’s a great way to honor his legacy.
“I can see or hear George right now saying, ‘honey please stop, this is embarrassing,’ but it’s not. Because that man loved what he did and that was country music and he loved Williamson County,” she said.
Jones, whose incredible career spanned nearly 60 years, called Williamson County home for a number of years.
He died in 2013 at the age of 81. Saturday would have been his 84th birthday.
