NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A couple injured in a violent and random machete attack in Nashville are expected to be released from a rehabilitation center soon. Their family and friends are raising money for a home caregiver to help the couple get back on their feet.

On a Sunday in May, Kevin and Leanne Craft were at the Public Storage building, when a suspect identified as Kelvin Edwards, entered the office with a machete and attacked them. Edwards told the detective he was mad about COVID-19 and the homeless shelter situation in Nashville.

It’s been a long road to recovery, but now things are looking up according to family friend Laura McGill. “It was heartbreaking, I literally felt nauseous that whole week,” McGill said, “They just have such a will to survive.”

McGill said Kevin and Leanne should be able to go home soon. “And they’re going to need 24/7 care.”

That’s why she started a Go Fund Me page to help pay for a caregiver.

“I believe the cost is going to be somewhere around $4,000 a week," said McGill.

It’s the least she can do for the friends she loves so much.

“They’re just wonderful people. I was neighbors with them for 3 years and everyone who meets them loves them," she added.

Family members credit a group of Metro Police Officers for saving Kevin and Leanne’s life by using tourniquets to stop the bleeding. A separate Go Fund Me page for those officershas raised nearly $19,000. McGill said a portion of it will go towards purchasing more tourniquets for Metro Police. “We didn’t realize that a lot of officers didn’t have those.”

McGill said she’s thankful Kevin and Leanne are alive, and she looks forward to seeing her dear friends soon.

“They’re amazing, they’re like the strongest people I’ve ever known,,” McGill said.
