NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A man caught trespassing Thursday morning at Ascend Amphitheater jumped in the Cumberland River to get away from police.

Police found Dean Murphy, 26, in the outdoor theater a little after midnight. Ascend is closed to the public between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., according to police.

Originally Murphy gave police a fake name. When police tried to arrest him he took off toward the river.

Officers said Murphy attempted to swim across the river to the other side, but gave up.

Murphy was arrested and charged with trespassing, resisting arrest and criminal impersonation.

Overnight, police were patrolling the riverfront in an effort to cut down on crimes involving the homeless population.

In August, police said the homeless population was involved in 20% of aggravated assaults and 40% of street robberies in the downtown district.
