Abercrombie collapsed on the sideline on September 29, 2018 in a game against cross-town rival Vanderbilt. He was immediately rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he underwent emergency brain surgery.
During a 2019 interview, Abercrombie discussed his recovery with Jon Burton, saying “[All I can say is] thank God. It's been a long journey, but God has helped me get back where I was."
