BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (WTVF) — Friends and family members will gather at visitation services for fallen Brentwood Police Officer Destin Legieza.

Police officials say Officer Legieza was hit and killed by a drunk driver last week. He was the first Brentwood Police officer to die in the line of duty.

"This is about a community and even though I’m not in law enforcement, we’re siblings. We’re brothers and sisters, we respond together, we eat together, we work out together, they hang out in our stations with our people; we’re family," said Brentwood Fire Chief Brian Goss.

Goss says he didn’t know Legieza personally. But when his team got the call early Thursday morning of an officer down, the call became personal.

"I got the call about seven minutes after they arrived on the scene and this has profoundly affected our people," said Goss.

Goss says a lot of people have been asking how can they honor Officer Legieza and he says with kindness.

"I say just be kind to your police officers, be kind to one another. I’ve been doing this for nearly 40 years and we don’t take for granted when we leave the house in the morning that we necessarily won’t be coming home again."

City officials asked members of the public to line the procession route since the church was packed with law enforcement.

The visitation was held Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at ClearView Baptist Church.

The City of Brentwood and Brentwood Police Department held a vigil in honor of Legieza the day after his death. His friends described him as "described as everyone’s best friend."
