FAIRVIEW, Tenn. (WTVF) — After our report helped expose unsafe living conditions at two Fairview apartment complexes, some repairs have begun — but tenants say the problems are far from over.
At Roundtree Manor Apartments, a ceiling that collapsed nearly two weeks ago in Lacy Sullivan's unit is finally being repaired. Her water heater closet, which is connected to the bathroom, now has the ceiling torn out as maintenance works to fix a leak in the apartment above, dry out the damaged area, and replace moldy ceiling tiles in the adjacent bathroom.
Next door at Parc Fairview, tenants shared pictures showing that openings in the crawl space beneath Building 12 have been sealed after our report exposed them. During that process, opossums were found living beneath the first-floor apartments and were trapped.
However, the rodent problem has not been resolved. On Saturday, tenant Jamia Dickerson recorded video of rats inside her apartment, crawling on her oven. Dickerson previously showed a large hole in her floor where rodents could enter. That hole still has not been completely fixed.
For tenant Cassandra Alderson, whose family is at risk of losing their Section 8 housing voucher, the situation may require leaving their home entirely. Their apartment at Parc Fairview failed a federally required housing inspection, putting their housing assistance at risk. An advocate has raised several hundred dollars to help the family of four relocate. The family wanted to stay, but ongoing maintenance problems left their apartment unable to pass inspection.
Some of the housing at these complexes is funded by state and federal tax dollars.
Three years ago, my reporting on Roundtree Manor Apartments led to work with the State Fire Marshal's office to bring some buildings up to code. Now, state inspectors have put together a new list of issues they want to see fixed quickly, including holes in a roof, pest elimination, spongy flooring, water leaking into homes, and poorly hooked-up electricity.
