NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — After three days in a row under a curfew, Nashville Mayor John Cooper said the city will not be under a curfew Tuesday night.
"There will be no citywide curfew tonight in Nashville," Mayor Cooper said. "Yesterday's peaceful demonstration on the steps of the State Capitol honored our city's history of nonviolent social change. First responders will maintain a presence to protect residents and property."
On Monday, activists and local church leaders walked from Legislative Plaza to the Capitol building to stand in front of National Guard troops. One of the participants asked the guardsmen to lower their shields, and the troops then laid them down.
The curfew was first issued on Saturday night following violence and destruction downtown. That night, Mayor Cooper issued a civil emergency order which allowed him to set curfews up to one week.
